Your friends and family buy a copy. Perhaps you gather a few early ratings from advance readers. But after doing well, and maybe even reaching number one in a category, the book collapses to a handful of page reads a day.

We’ve all been there. That was my experience with Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 1. It was launched and hit number one in all three of its categories in the US and UK. Then it sank down the rankings. Sales became mythological and page reads slowed to a dribble.

A few things helped to make it consistently in the top 100, if not the top 10 horror anthologies. I wrote three more sequels. I advertised at the beginning. I’ve done giveaways. I’ve done ARC reviews.

However, by the time it passed three hundred reviews, the difference was unmistakable. The larger catalogue, advertising, giveaways and accumulated social proof were working together. The book no longer looked like an untested release from an unknown author. After all, publishing your first book is difficult. But convincing strangers to take a chance on it is even harder.

A recognised author arrives with an existing readership, a mailing list, a catalogue and years of accumulated recommendations. A debut author arrives with a cover, a blurb and an empty review section.

Thanks for reading! Depending on your genre, catalogue, audience and promotional budget, it may take months or years. Steady legitimate growth is more valuable to your long-term career than an artificial launch-week spike.

Throughout this article, I use “reviews” as shorthand for Amazon’s combined body of star ratings and written customer reviews. Many readers will leave only a rating, but that still contributes valuable social proof even if it does not provide the same depth of feedback as a written review.

One hundred is not a magical number buried inside Amazon’s algorithm. Amazon does not publicly identify it as a ranking threshold. But it is a useful psychological and commercial milestone. By the time a book reaches one hundred reviews, it usually looks established enough that readers no longer feel they are taking a risk on something completely untested.

The objective is not to manufacture or pretend approval. It is to place your book in front of enough suitable readers that honest reviews accumulate naturally.

Why Amazon Reviews Matter

Reviews reduce uncertainty

Readers cannot inspect an ebook before buying it in the same way they might examine a physical book in a shop. They must judge it from the cover, description, sample and reactions of previous readers.

Amazon itself describes customer reviews as a way for readers to discover what other people think about a book and make an informed purchasing decision.

Source: Amazon KDP: Customer Reviews

A book with no reviews presents several unanswered questions:

Is the writing competent?

Does the book fulfil the promise made by its cover and blurb?

Is it really the genre the author claims it is?

Has anyone outside the author’s immediate circle read it?

Reviews provide evidence that real readers have completed the book and responded (hopefully positively) to it.

Reviews provide social proof

Readers do not expect every book to have thousands of reviews. They understand that independent and debut authors operate on a smaller scale.

They still look for signs that other people have gone first.

Five reviews suggest that a handful of people (often family and friends, I explain later why this is a bad idea) have tried the book. Twenty reviews suggest that it has found an audience. One hundred reviews suggest that it has developed a genuine body of readers.

The rating matters, but the volume of responses matters too. A 4.5-star book supported by one hundred opinions usually appears more dependable than a five-star book supported by three.

A hundred reviews will also even out the rough edges. One star reviews are frustrating, especially at the beginning, when one review can absolutely tank your average. But as more legitimate ratings accumulate, the displayed rating should become more representative of the wider readership.

Reviews strengthen your advertising

Advertising can bring readers to an Amazon page, but it cannot make them buy.

Once someone clicks an advert, the cover, blurb, sample, price and reviews must complete the sale. A book with a healthy collection of reviews has more evidence supporting its promise.

Reviews will not rescue a weak cover or misleading blurb. They can, however, reduce the remaining hesitation after those elements have done their work.

This makes reviews part of your conversion system. Better conversion means that more of the traffic you already pay for becomes sales or Kindle Unlimited reads.

Reviews reveal how readers position your book

Authors know what they intended to write. Reviews reveal what readers believe they received.

Look for repeated words and ideas:

“Atmospheric.”

“Fast-paced.”

“Disturbing.”

“Character-driven.”

“Folk horror.”

“Too violent.”

“Man bun.”

“Slow beginning.”

“Unexpected ending.”

These patterns help you understand which parts of your positioning are working and which parts aren’t. They can influence future blurbs, advertising language, cover decisions and even the direction of your next book.

Do not change your plans for the sequel because of one hostile review. Instead, pay attention when several unrelated readers make the same observation, or even better focus on the bits that people do enjoy. Play to your strengths.

Reviews make the rating more resilient

A book with six five-star ratings can be badly affected by a single low rating. A book with one hundred ratings has a broader base.

Amazon does not calculate a book’s displayed star rating as a straightforward mathematical average. It uses machine-learned models and considers factors such as the trustworthiness of reviews.

Source: Amazon: Understanding Customer Reviews and Ratings

Source: Amazon KDP: Customer Reviews

The principle remains useful. A larger body of legitimate reader feedback gives potential customers a more representative picture than a handful of early reactions.

An Author’s First Rule: Do Not Manipulate Reviews

Repeat after me. “Do NOT manipulate reviews!”

Amazon allows authors to provide free or discounted copies to readers. You may not require a review in exchange or attempt to influence what the reader writes.

You cannot offer gift cards, payments, prizes or other compensation for a review. Amazon states that anything beyond the free or discounted book itself can invalidate the resulting review.

Breach of Amazon’s review policies can result in reviews being removed and may place your publishing account at risk. Amazon’s KDP Terms allow it to take action against an account, including suspension or termination, when a publisher breaches the agreement or its associated programme policies.

If your KDP account is terminated, continuing as an Amazon-focused self-published author becomes very, very difficult.

Source: Amazon KDP: Customer Reviews

Use neutral language:

‘I’m providing a free advance copy with no obligation to review. A hundred legitimate reviews are valuable. A hundred suspicious reviews can damage the book and potentially your account.

How to Get Reviews as a Debut Author

Start before publication

The worst time to begin looking for reviewers is after the book has launched.

Create an advance reader copy, usually called an ARC, several weeks before publication. This should be the finished book in every meaningful respect. It should already have been edited, proofread and formatted.

An ARC reader is not a substitute for an editor. Their job is to read the book as an ordinary customer would and, if they wish, share an honest reaction after publication.

Recruit more ARC readers than the number of reviews you hope to receive. Some people will not start the book. Some will abandon it. Some will finish but forget to review. Others may be unable to post on Amazon.

Do not regard this as dishonesty or failure. A free copy creates an opportunity to read. It does not create an obligation.

Find readers, not reviewers

Your ideal ARC team is made from people who already read your genre.

A hundred random readers are less useful than fifty committed readers who regularly buy books similar to yours. Genre compatibility improves the chance that they will finish the book and leave a relevant review.

Do not expect every ARC recipient to review. Some will never download the book, some will not finish it, some will forget, and some will be unable to post on Amazon. To accumulate one hundred legitimate ratings and reviews, you will normally need substantially more than one hundred readers.

Potential ARC readers can come from:

Your mailing list

Your social media followers

Genre-specific reader communities

Book clubs

Existing beta readers

Followers of your reader magnet

Reputable ARC distribution platforms (I personally favour BookSprout)

Readers recruited through another author’s newsletter, with their consent

Do not enter communities and immediately demand reviews. Dropping drive-by promotional links without participating is one of the quickest ways to become unwelcome (don’t be that guy). Discuss books, contribute to conversations and become recognisable before recruiting readers. Choose your communities carefully. Many Facebook groups consist largely of writers trying to sell books to other writers. That may produce professional contacts, but it rarely reaches your target readership. Find the places where your actual readers gather.

For further viewing, this is one of the topics we cover in HAG Chat: Ash Ericmore ( https://britishhorror.substack.com/p/hag-chat-ash-ericmore )

Build a small audience before launching the book

A debut author may have no customers, but that does not mean they must launch without an audience.

Offer a short story, sample, prequel, deleted scene or other reader magnet in exchange for newsletter subscriptions. The purpose is not merely to collect email addresses. It is to identify people interested in your kind of fiction.

I use BookFunnel group promos for this, but in the past, I have used StoryOrigin and even Prolific Works (formerly Instafreebie).

Make the process simple

Every unnecessary step loses readers.

Give ARC readers:

A clear delivery date

A choice of common ebook formats

The publication date

The correct Amazon link once the book is live

A neutral reminder that reviews are voluntary

A simple method of reporting formatting or file problems

Do not send a lengthy instruction manual explaining what they should mention. That risks influencing the review and makes the process feel like unpaid work.

A reader should be able to receive the book, read it and find the review page without confusion.

Ask inside the book

Place a brief review request in the back matter, immediately after the story ends.

Readers who reach this page have completed the book. They are the people most qualified to review it.

Use direct language:

Thank you for reading. Honest reviews help other readers decide whether this book is right for them. You can leave a rating or review on Amazon using the link below.

Don’t apologise for asking, don’t beg and don’t write several paragraphs explaining how difficult publishing is. They are reading your book for entertainment. They don’t want a lecture.

Make the request clear and then move on to the next book, mailing-list link or reader offer.

Ask your mailing list

Many satisfied readers never review books because the thought simply does not occur to them.

Include a review request in your launch email. Send one later reminder to readers who may not have finished immediately.

The message should focus on usefulness rather than guilt:

Finished the book? An honest Amazon review helps other horror readers decide whether it belongs on their list.

Do not repeatedly chase subscribers. A review request should be a routine part of publication, not a sustained pressure campaign.

Continue promoting the book

Reviews are a result of readership.

After the initial ARC period, the only sustainable way to increase reviews is to increase the number of suitable people reading the book.

Useful methods include:

Newsletter promotions

Price promotions

Kindle Unlimited

Reader magnets

Podcast appearances

British horror authors are welcome to come and join us on HAG Chat.

Author interviews

Social media content

Paid advertising

Be careful with this. Paid advertising is often harder to make profitable when a book has little social proof, so control your early budget carefully.

Cross-promotions with compatible authors

Further releases in the same series or genre

Avoid training regular readers to expect constant discounts. Concentrated seasonal promotions preserve urgency better than repeatedly reducing the price. I now discount primarily during launches and major promotional periods such as Black Friday.

A second book can sell the first. A third book can strengthen the entire catalogue. Readers who discover you through a later release may return and review earlier titles.

This is why building a catalogue usually produces better long-term results than spending months attempting to force one debut novel to reach an arbitrary number.

A Practical Route to One Hundred Reviews

Break the target into stages.

Reviews 1 to 10: prove the book has readers

Your first reviews will usually come from ARC readers, early subscribers and people already following your work.

At this stage, check that the reviews describe the book readers were promised. If the reviews describe a different genre from the one promised by your cover, blurb or Amazon categories, investigate the positioning before spending more on promotion.

Reviews 11 to 25: improve the sales page

You may now have enough written feedback to begin identifying repeated themes.

Review your cover, blurb and advertising. Emphasise the qualities readers consistently value. Correct misleading expectations. You can test new blurbs or covers using the approach mentioned in this article ( https://britishhorror.substack.com/p/using-facebook-ads-to-test-your-story ).

Do not quote customer reviews in promotional material without considering permissions and the rules of the platform where the quotation will appear. The more useful approach is to study the language readers use and understand what they value.

Reviews 26 to 50: widen your reach

Move beyond the initial launch circle.

Run promotions, arrange newsletter swaps, pursue interviews and continue building your mailing list. Your review total should now grow because new readers are discovering the book, not because the same launch group is being reminded again.

Reviews 51 to 100: build consistency

At this stage, the process matters more than any individual campaign.

Every new reader should encounter a polite review request in the back matter. Every release should have an ARC process. Every newsletter launch should include a review link. Every promotion should be measured by sales, reads, subscriptions and resulting reviews.

The final fifty may arrive more slowly than the first fifty. That is normal. Early reviewers are deliberately recruited. Later reviewers are increasingly drawn from ordinary customers.

What to Do After Reaching One Hundred

After reaching one hundred reviews, gathering further reviews should become less labour-intensive and increasingly driven by ordinary readership.

Stop chasing the number

Do not continue emailing the same readers because you want 150, 200 or 500 reviews.

Keep attracting new readers. Let the review count follow.

A sudden cluster of forced activity is less valuable than a steady stream of genuine ratings and reviews produced by ongoing sales.

Build the process into every release

For your next book:

Prepare the ARC earlier

Recruit from readers who completed the previous book

Improve file delivery

Schedule launch communication in advance

Include the review request in the finished manuscript

Record how many ARC copies were distributed

Record how many ARC readers downloaded the book

Record how many ratings and written reviews appeared

Your first launch creates the process. Each later launch refines it.

Study the feedback without getting enraged

Firstly, NEVER reply to negative reviews. Reviews are for readers, not authors. No matter how insulting or inaccurate the review may be, it isn’t your place to challenge it, and doing so can torpedo your reputation. Never argue, correct or pressure reviewers. Doing so is a race to the bottom and will get you nowhere positive.

A brief private thank-you to an ARC reader is a positive thing, and is different from publicly disputing a customer review.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" That initial surge drives ranking, visibility, and early reviews.

How do you actually get a mailing list?

Sure, you can register for SubStack, which is free and does have a limited level of internal promotion. But you still have to get the word out to people, otherwise you’ll be stuck with zero subscribers.

BookFunnel group promotions are one of the most underutilized tools for building your email list as an author. They’re free to participate in for BookFunnel subscribers, low effort, and can expose your books to thousands of new readers in a matter of days. They’re also incredibly popular with readers, allowing them to access a library of free books with just a few clicks.

What happens after someone subscribes?

Most email platforms (MailerLite, ConvertKit, AWeber) let you set up a basic welcome sequence, a series of automated emails that introduce new subscribers to you and your books.

If you’re using a paid platform like Klaviyo, you can build more sophisticated onboarding sequences that significantly increase conversion to paid sales. That’s outside the scope of this article, but worth exploring once you’ve built your list to a few thousand subscribers.

What Are BookFunnel Group Promos?

A BookFunnel group promo is a coordinated promotion where multiple authors, anywhere from 10 to 100 or more, pool their email lists to cross-promote each other’s books.

<picture></picture>

https://bookfunnel.com/

(NOTE: I’m not affiliated with BookFunnel in any way, but I have used them for over four years now.)

How it works

An organiser creates a promo and sets the parameters: genre, book type, and participation requirements.

Authors apply to join. If accepted, they add their book to the promo page.

Every participating author emails their list about the promo, driving traffic to one shared BookFunnel landing page.

Readers browse the page, click on books that interest them, and either download them or get redirected to Amazon.

Note on sample chapters

Some promos allow them, but whole books or short stories perform better. Readers expect complete stories, and sample chapters can feel like a bait and switch. Only join sample chapter promos if that is all you have available.

The Disadvantages of Promo Subscribers

Subscriber quality is lower than other channels

Promo subscribers are colder than readers who find you organically or through paid ads. They signed up for a bundle of free books, not specifically for you. Expect lower open rates, lower engagement, and lower conversion to paid sales.

But they’re a highly cost-effective way of exposing a new generation of readers to your work. You can’t compare promo list growth to Facebook Ads list growth and expect the same performance. They’re different quality tiers.

Diminishing returns with repeated participation

Your first few promos will perform best. After that, you start seeing the same readers across multiple promos. They’ve already decided whether they’re interested in your books.

If you’re running promos every month and seeing declining results, that’s why. The pool of new-to-you readers shrinks with each promo.

How to combat diminishing returns:

Rotate your reader magnets.
Don’t offer the same book in every promo. If you’ve been promoting Book 1 for six months, switch to a prequel novella or a different series starter. Fresh material attracts readers who passed on your previous offers.

Vary promo types.
Mix reader magnet promos (building your list) with sales promos (promoting a discounted book). Different promo types attract different reader behaviours and reduce overlap.

Reduce frequency.
If you’ve been doing monthly promos and results are declining, pull back to quarterly. Give the reader pool time to refresh. Scarcity increases impact.

Types of Group Promos

Reader Magnet Promos
Authors offer free books in exchange for email signups. Best for list building.

Sales Promos
Authors link directly to Amazon or other retailers where books are discounted or full price. Best for driving sales and visibility.

How to Find and Choose the Right Promos

Log into BookFunnel and navigate to the Promotions tab. Use Change My Promo Settings to filter by genre, promo type, and participation requirements.

Evaluation criteria

Genre relevance
Only join promos that match your books. A thriller author in a cosy mystery promo attracts the wrong readers.

Organizer list size
Check the organizer’s subscriber count (usually listed in promo details). Larger lists mean more traffic potential.

Promo size
10-30 authors: Smaller but more targeted. Your book stands out more.
50-100+ authors: Massive reach but fierce competition for attention.

Participation Requirements

If you don’t have an email list, don’t join

BookFunnel tracks your participation quality. If you join but don’t email your list (or fail to meet other requirements), your quality score drops. Organizers can see your track record. A low score gets you rejected from future promos.

Email your list

You must send at least one email promoting the group promo to your subscribers.

Social media sharing

Some promos require posts on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Check the rules before applying.

Minimum list size

Some promos require 100, 500, or 1,000+ subscribers. Others have no minimum. New authors should focus on promos with no list size requirements.

Minimum viable participation:

An email list (even 50 subscribers counts for promos with no minimum)

Ability to send at least one promotional email during the promo window

Time to set up your entry correctly and test your links

One well-promoted promo beats five half-hearted ones. Don’t overcommit. Join only what you can properly support.

Past performance

Some organizers run promos regularly. If you see the same organizer hosting multiple successful promos, that’s a good sign.

What to Offer in a Group Promo

Best option

Full prequel novel or Book 1 of a completed series, if you can absorb the revenue impact.

Good option

Standalone novella or short story set in your world.

Low effort option

First two to three chapters of Book 1, if the promo allows sample chapters. This is not recommended.
Avoid: random short stories in unrelated genres to your main series. You want readers who will buy your other books.

How to Set Up Your Promo Entry

Once accepted, you will add your book to the shared landing page. BookFunnel walks you through the technical setup, including cover upload, title, and links.

What actually matters for conversions

Your book description
This is not your full blurb. It is a 150 to 300 word teaser competing against 50 or more other books on the same page. Hook fast or get scrolled past.

Your cover
It must work at thumbnail size. Readers are browsing on phones. If your title is not readable or your genre is not instantly clear, you are invisible.

Testing
Test everything before the promo goes live. Broken links do not just kill conversions, they damage your BookFunnel reputation and can get you rejected from future promos. Click your own links. Download your own book. Make sure it works.

How to Promote Your Group Promo

Email Your List

Every author in the promo emails their list. That creates the traffic pool everyone benefits from. Send it as a standalone email or include it in your regular newsletter.

Maximise clicks

Use multiple clickable elements. Include both the book cover image and a CTA button, both linking to the promo.

Place it above the Gmail fold

Most readers open on mobile. Gmail truncates long emails. Put your promo in the first 150 to 200 words so it appears before the ‘show more’ cut-off.

Mention it two to three times

Space mentions across several days during the promo window. Balance with your regular content so you are not just sending promos.

Frame it as discovery, not obligation

Don’t say ‘here is a promo I am in’. Say ‘I found some great [genre] reads you will love’. Readers respond to curated recommendations, not generic lists. Never claim to have read books you have not. Emails need authenticity.

Social Media Promotion

Your newsletter is your main driver of traffic. Social media only expands reach if you have an existing audience or access to large groups.

Instagram
Post to Stories with a direct link using the link sticker. Post twice, once at the start and once near the end.

Facebook
Share on your author page. Post in large ‘free books’ or ‘book deals’ groups if the rules allow.

Why large groups matter: a group with 50,000 members and low engagement will drive more promo traffic than a tight-knit group of 500. For promos, reach beats engagement.

If your social following is small, under 1,000, your time is better spent writing a second promo email than posting to Instagram.

Measuring Promo Success

Track these metrics:

Email clicks

How many subscribers clicked your promo link. Check your email platform analytics.

BookFunnel downloads

How many readers downloaded your book. BookFunnel shows this in your dashboard.

New subscribers

If offering a reader magnet, how many new emails you gained. This is your core return on investment.

Amazon sales for sales promos

Use Amazon Attribution links to track clicks and purchases from the promo.

Basics of Amazon Attribution

Time efficiency

If you spent half an hour and gained 50 subscribers, that is 36 seconds per subscriber. Compare that to the time it takes to generate 50 subscribers through Facebook Ads. Promos are often faster and cheaper.

Channel performance

Not all channels perform equally. Your newsletter might drive 30 percent of clicks while Facebook groups drive 60 percent. Track what works and prioritise those channels next time.

Thanks for reading! are making £300 a month before you even consider advertising. It is very easy to burn through cash when advertising, and if your product is not ready, you will not get a good rate of return. I burnt through £11k through various expenses before I started making a profit. My blurb wasn’t correct, my keywords were not specific enough, and my ads were amateurish. You need to have the foundations in place before you start advertising.

Thanks for reading! If you can’t afford a good cover, you can’t afford advertising full stop.

A blurb that you’ve tested. That’s what we’ll focus on today.

A mailing list that you maintain with a minimum of a monthly newsletter.

This article will cover ways to test your blurb using Facebook Ads.

Along with your cover, your blurb is one of the most important sales tools you have as an author. It is your pitch that will convert browsers into buyers on your Amazon product page.

But ordinarily you have a problem. Testing blurbs on Amazon is painfully slow and does not give you adequate metrics to measure.

You upload a new blurb. Wait two weeks. Check your sales. Upload another blurb. Wait two weeks. Check again.

Testing blurbs on Amazon is tedious and slow. Amazon’s algorithm also needs time to adjust to changes on your product page, which makes it hard to isolate whether a sales change is due to your new blurb or just normal fluctuation. Furthermore, if a BookTokker sends a large number of clicks your way, or seasonal variations in buying habits become favourable, a bad blurb can appear more effective.

When I first started out, I wrote my own blurb. Sales weren’t great, so I burnt £500 on an agency that gave me another blurb. Sales didn’t improve. I had no way of knowing which was best.

Facebook Ads let you test multiple blurbs quickly and cheaply. You can run 4–6 different blurbs simultaneously, gather meaningful data in 5–7 days, and identify a winner before you even touch your Amazon product page.

Why Facebook Ads Work for Blurb Testing

Facebook Ads give you something Amazon does not: speed, measurability, and control.

Here is what makes them ideal for testing blurbs:

Fast data collection

Run multiple blurbs at once

Get results in days, not weeks

Test 5–6 variations in the time it takes to test one on Amazon

Cheap testing

£3–5 per blurb per day

Total spend: £21–35 for testing a blurb

Much cheaper than weeks of potentially poor Amazon sales. Far cheaper than spending thousands of pounds on adverts that fail to convert

Clear metrics

CTR All shows total engagement with the ad, including ‘See More’, reactions, comments, and other clicks.

Unique Outbound CTR tells you if they are clicking through to Amazon

Both metrics reveal which blurb hooks readers best

Controlled Comparative Testing

Same image across all ads

Same headline across all ads

Only the blurb changes

No Amazon algorithm interference

Your Amazon product page stays untouched

No ranking disruption

No algorithm confusion

What You Are Actually Testing

When you test blurbs with Facebook Ads, you are measuring two things.

The Hook (CTR All)

On mobile, Facebook often truncates the primary text early, though the exact cutoff varies by device, placement, and formatting. Readers see a “See More” button if they want to keep reading.

CTR All measures how many people click “See More” or like, react, or comment. This can introduce some noise into our data, but “See More” represents the majority of interactions.

A strong CTR All means your first sentence or two (the hook) are doing their job. The first sentence drives curiosity, the rest of the blurb drives the click.

For horror specifically, readers respond most strongly to atmosphere, threat, and dread in the opening line rather than character biography or worldbuilding. Effective horror hooks usually establish one of three things immediately:

Something unnatural has appeared

Someone is about to enter a dangerous place

A character already knows something is terribly wrong

When testing horror blurbs, experiment with hooks that emphasise the disturbing element of the story, the location where the horror occurs, or the immediate threat facing the characters. Hooks that introduce dread or unease tend to outperform slower setups that begin with background information.

The Full Blurb (Unique Outbound CTR)

Once someone clicks “See More” and reads your full blurb, do they click through to your Amazon page?

Unique Outbound CTR measures how many people click your Amazon link after reading the full blurb.

This shows whether the full blurb converts interest into clicks.

A strong Unique Outbound CTR means your blurb as a whole is working. It sets the right expectations and creates enough interest to drive action.

How to Set Up a Blurb Testing Campaign

Step 1: Write 4–6 Different Blurbs

Do not just tweak a word here and there. Create genuinely different versions that test different angles.

Different hooks. Question versus statement versus tension

Different emotional triggers. Fear, curiosity, revenge, loss

Different character focus. Protagonist versus antagonist versus relationship

Different tropes emphasised. Body horror versus folk horror versus psychological dread.

Different structures. Short and punchy versus longer and atmospheric

Step 2: Include Your Current Blurb

Always test your existing Amazon blurb as one of the variations. This gives you a baseline to compare against.

If your current blurb outperforms everything else, you know the problem is not your blurb. It is something else on your product page such as cover, reviews, price, or Look Inside.

Step 3: Create Your Campaign Structure

Campaign Level

Campaign name: “Blurb Testing – [Book Title]”

Campaign objective: Traffic

Budget: Set at ad set level, not campaign level

Ad Set Level

Create one ad set per blurb. For example, five blurbs equals five ad sets

Budget: £3–5 per ad set per day, adjusted based on your total budget

Audience: Use your proven targeting from existing campaigns, or broad if you are new

Placement: Manual Placements — Facebook Feed only

Duration: 7 days minimum

Ad Level

One ad per ad set

Use your book’s cover image in every ad. Later, once you have scaled your advertising, you can use a proven winning advert image, but keep it the same for each blurb

Use the same headline in every ad

Use the same link description in every ad. A basic example is “Kindle | KU | Print”. If you are in Kindle Unlimited, otherwise remove the KU. It’s not essential for blurb testing, if in doubt, leave it blank.

Only change the primary text, which is your blurb

Critical: The primary text should contain only what you would put on Amazon. No “Available in Kindle Unlimited”, “Grab your copy today”, or formatting notes. Only the blurb itself.

Step 4: Set Up Amazon Attribution Links

Use Amazon Attribution links in your ads so you can track which blurb actually drives sales, if any.

Create a unique Amazon Attribution link for each ad set inside your Amazon Advertising account (under "Measure & Optimize" > "Amazon Attribution"). This lets you see which blurb drove actual sales, though with small budgets and short tests, sales data will be very limited.

Basics of Amazon Attribution

NOTE: You’re not optimising for sales, though they do give you useful data. You are optimising for engagement metrics such as CTR All and Unique Outbound CTR.

Sales data is a bonus. With only five to seven days and small budgets, you might not get enough sales to draw conclusions. The click data is what matters.

How to Analyse Your Results

After 7 days, or once each ad has spent £21 to £35, pull your data.

Metrics to Look At

1. CTR All (Click Through Rate All)

Shows how many people clicked on the ad, usually for ‘See More’, but also includes likes, comments and reactions.

Higher values indicate a stronger hook.

Compare each blurb against the others in the same test first, and benchmarks second. 2-3 is pretty good, some genres can hit up to 10.

2. Unique Outbound CTR

Unique Outbound CTR measures how many people clicked the Amazon link after seeing the ad. Higher values indicate a more compelling full blurb. On cold traffic, outbound CTR will often be much lower than CTR All.

This is your primary decision metric.

3. Cost Per Click (CPC)

Lower CPC often correlates with a higher CTR.

Facebook rewards engaging content with cheaper clicks.

4. Impressions and Reach

Ensure each ad receives roughly similar exposure.

If one ad receives ten times fewer impressions, the data is not comparable.

What You Are Looking For

A clear winner will usually emerge. One blurb will have noticeably higher CTR All and Unique Outbound CTR than the others.

Sometimes you will see:

High CTR All, low Unique Outbound CTR = great hook, weak follow through.

Low CTR All, high Unique Outbound CTR = weak hook, strong full blurb, but fewer people see it.

Ideally, both metrics will be high.

What If There Is No Clear Winner?

If all blurbs perform similarly, within 0.2 to 0.3 percent of each other, it may indicate:

1. Your targeting is off. The wrong audience is seeing the ads.

2. Your cover or headline is the problem rather than the blurb.

3. Your blurbs are too similar and are not different enough to test meaningfully.

4. Your book concept itself needs work. Harsh, but possible.

Taking Your Winner to Amazon

Once the winning blurb has been identified, upload it to your Amazon product page.

Do not expect instant results.

Amazon’s algorithm takes time to adjust. Allow at least 14 to 30 days before judging whether the new blurb improves sales.

Track your sales and read-through to confirm the blurb is converting browsers into buyers.

If sales don’t improve, the problem might be your cover, price, reviews, or Look Inside and not your blurb.

NOTE: A blurb that wins on Facebook will not always win on Amazon. They are different platforms with different reader behaviours.

Facebook provides a strong indicator of what is most likely to work. It isn’t a guarantee, but it’s better than guessing.

Common Gotchas

1. Testing Too Many Variables at Once

If the image and the headline and the blurb are all changed, it becomes impossible to identify which element made the difference.

Fix: Keep the image and headline identical. Test only the blurb.

2. Not Running Long Enough

Three days does not produce enough data. At least five to seven days are required, ideally a full week. With a limited budget, run fewer tests rather than shorter tests. Inadequate data prevents informed decisions.

Fix: Run for a minimum of seven days, or until each ad has spent £21 to £35.

Case Study

Here’s a practical test using Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 1.

This blurb has already been tested several times, so I expected the current version to hold up. The point of the test was to check that assumption.

I’m going to test four blurbs:

Blurb One (the existing blurb for a baseline):

16 TERRIFYING HORROR STORIES IN ONE COLLECTION
From the 17th century to the distant future, across Nepal, Europe, and South Africa—these macabre tales will horrify you. That’s the hard part done, right?

Sadly not.

Writing the book is just the beginning. What comes next, positioning, packaging, and marketing your debut, determines whether anyone actually reads it.

As someone who has been through the brutal process and made a huge number of expensive mistakes, I’m going to walk you through what actually matters when self-publishing your first horror novel.

Don’t believe the fantasy stories where you can just upload your book to Amazon and watch the sales roll in.

The reality is that being an author means running a business. Success comes when you approach it with that in mind.

Everything below exists for one purpose: to give your book the best possible chance of earning readers over the long term.

Thanks for reading! It doesn’t matter if readers bounce before they even click.

Here’s what needs to be professional grade before you publish.

The Cover

Horror has a specific visual language. Dark palettes. Bold typography. Genre appropriate imagery such as haunted houses, fog, shadows, unsettling figures, and skulls.

Your cover needs to scream “horror” at thumbnail size, because that’s where 90% of readers first see it. When they are scrolling on a mobile, with Bob’s Burgers on the TV in the background, scanning search results, and looking at also bought carousels.

Hire a professional designer who has horror experience. Show them five to ten bestselling horror covers in your subgenre. Say, “I want to fit in with these.”

If you need references, Daniel Willcocks has some excellent ones at https://devilsrockbooks.com/book-cover-designers/. Ash Ericmore is also a fixture in the community for designing book covers at https://linktr.ee/ashericmore.

Budget: £50–300 for a solid cover.

The Blurb

Repeat it to yourself. A blurb is not a synopsis, it’s a sales pitch.

Hook them immediately. Don’t try to sell your reader with the plot. Sell them with the stakes.

Study bestselling horror blurbs on Amazon. Notice the patterns.

• Short paragraphs that are mobile friendly
• Strong opening line
• Clear protagonist and threat
• Atmosphere over plot details
• Urgency

Don’t explain your entire plot. Don’t list every character. Make them curious and desperate to read more.

Blurbs are a form of ad copy, and you can expect to rewrite your blurb many times. A really good use for Facebook Ads is to test different blurbs and see which results in more sales.

The Look Inside

Amazon’s Look Inside shows readers your first 10% for free. Make those opening pages count. Too many people waste these pages thanking their cat, or adding author’s notes, world building information, or a flabby prologue that readers will usually skip anyway.

Hook them fast. Horror readers want atmosphere, tension, and a reason to care about your protagonist within the first few pages.

Formatting

Professional formatting matters. Readers notice sloppy indents, inconsistent spacing, and amateur chapter breaks.

Use Vellum on Mac, Atticus, my preferred choice, or hire a formatter on Fiverr. It’s either cheap or a one-time software cost, and makes your book look like it belongs on the shelf with the rest of us.

Reviews (Eventually)

You usually can’t launch with reviews on Amazon. But you can launch with social proof.

Send advance copies to:

• Beta readers, for feedback, not public reviews yet
• Your email list, if you’re building one pre-launch. I strongly recommend Substack for this
• Horror book bloggers and reviewers. Research who accepts indie horror

Don’t stress if you launch with zero reviews. Focus on getting reviews in the first 30 to 60 days through:

• Asking readers in your back matter
• Running promo sites that require reviews. I use BookSprout. Others use NetGalley, but I find it has a lower return on investment
• Engaging with horror communities

Aim for 20 or more reviews as your first milestone to establish credibility.

Build Your Email List From Day One

Every other platform can disappear tomorrow. Advertising platforms regularly change their algorithms, often without warning.

Facebook could ban your ad account, or it could become the new MySpace and disappear (I miss you, Tim).

Your email list? You own it. Nobody can take it away.

How to build it

Create a reader magnet, such as a free short story, prequel chapter, or bonus content related to your horror novel.

Set up a simple landing page using Substack, MailerLite, BookFunnel, or your author website. Offer the free content in exchange for an email address.

Drive traffic to it through:

• Back matter in your book, for example, “Want a free horror story? Click here…”
• Social media bios
• BookFunnel group promos

Start collecting emails before launch if possible. Even 50 to 100 emails gives you a launch team.

Send regular emails, monthly at a minimum. Share book updates, behind the scenes content, horror recommendations, and personal stories. Build connection and be consistent with your schedule.

When you launch your next book, you’ll have an audience ready to buy.

Write Book Two

One book is tough to build a business around. Without read-through, you’ll really struggle to get a good return on investment with any kind of marketing, and without marketing you won’t be able to scale.

Horror readers want a backlist to binge.

I just finished reading all nine books from Lee Mountford’s Perron Manor series. I found book one via a BookBub ad. Now, how much profit did that little ad make from me? Compare it to if there was only one book available to buy.

If you’re writing a series, try to get Book Two out within six to twelve months of book one.

If you’re writing standalones, aim for the same timeline. This will prove you’re not a one book wonder and are worth a reader’s time.

What Not to Do (Mistakes That Tank Debuts)

I’m pretty sure I’ve been guilty of most of these.

Don’t

• Launch without a professional cover
• Spam social media hoping for organic sales
• Expect Amazon’s algorithm to discover you without advertising
• Compare your day one to someone else’s year three
• Spend money you can’t afford to lose on ads. This is the single biggest temptation and the easiest way to lose money
• Give up after 90 days because “it’s not working”
• Try to master Facebook Ads, Amazon Ads, TikTok, Instagram, and newsletter swaps simultaneously
• Launch without an email list strategy
• Write Book Two in a completely different genre unless you’re using a pen name

Do

• Invest in professional packaging, cover, blurb, and formatting
• Build your email list from day one
• Track everything in spreadsheets, including sales, ad spend, ROAS, and list growth
• Write the next book

Thanks for reading! by Substack. I don’t. This article explains how to survive its implementation, addressing platform compliance, regulatory impact and distribution constraints.

I do not support censorship in any of its forms.

Some readers have reported being asked by Substack to verify their age before accessing recent posts. This is the result of new online safety legislation, particularly the UK Online Safety Act and similar laws in other regions. This is affecting ALL Substacks, and horror is a genre that is disproportionately targeted due to its content.

https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/42995315367572-Why-is-Substack-asking-to-verify-my-age

Thanks for reading! This applies even when the material is fictional, literary, or contextual, including horror fiction.

Under Substack’s 18+ content policy, age-restricted material can include fictional or descriptive depictions of violence, graphic injury, abuse, harassment, hate content, or themes involving self-harm, dangerous behaviour, or other mature subject matter. As a horror publication, much of my work falls within these legally defined categories, which is why an age gate may appear.

If you are affected, you may see blurred posts, blocked pages, or limited access to comments, chats, or live features. Nothing about the content itself has changed, and nothing has been flagged as illegal or improper. This is purely a compliance requirement imposed on the platform.

This will not affect most readers. It currently applies primarily to readers in the UK and Australia, and many of you will already be considered age verified. This includes paid subscribers using a credit or debit card, or anyone who has completed age verification on another participating service. If not, Substack may prompt a one-off age check using a secure third-party provider. Once completed, you should not be asked again.

If you choose not to verify your age, some content and features may remain unavailable.

One frustration on my end is that when a post is flagged, the restriction can apply to the entire email, including free sections such as group promos, even when the main story is already behind a paid and age-verified paywall. Reclassification can be requested, but it occurs after the email has already been sent.

This process is imposed at the platform level and cannot be disabled or bypassed by individual writers. Like many authors on Substack, I am actively reviewing how best to minimise disruption while continuing to provide the content you expect.

Thanks for reading!
